What Is Swannanoa?
Lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist James H. Dooley built a 23,000 square foot Georgian and Italian marble mansion in 1912 and named it – you guessed it – Swannanoa. While abandoned during the Great Depression, it was lovingly restored from 1999-2006. The extensive house and grounds now allows for public tours, as well as private events and photoshoots.
How Far Is Swannanoa from Charlottesville?
The Swannanoa estate is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, specifically Afton Mountain in Afton, VA. If you take I-64W from Charlottesville, you’ll arrive at Swannanoa in about 30 minutes. (That’s if we don’t stop for mountain photos along the way!)
How Much Does Swannanona Cost?
The cost of using Swannanoa for photos varies depending on location, number of photographers, and whether you’ll need a place to change. There is a one hour minimum.
If you want photos outside with one photographer and no changing space, you’ll pay $129 when booking online (this includes their service fee). If you want single-photographer photos outside and inside, you’ll pay $335 (again, this includes their service fee).
Is the Price Worth It?
You’re the only one who can decide whether a photo venue is worth the price. I’ll never pressure you into a venue. However, Swannanoa is a beautiful, unique setting that many people are excited to use for their photos.

The photos we take will depend on the type of session you’re booking me for (graduation, engagement, family, etc.). Swannanoa’s timeless marble, ivory-covered tower, grand staircase, and Tiffany stained glass window give any photos an elegant, fairy-tale vibe.
